Early in our history, the MFA began reaching
out to the community offering workshops, demonstrations, and artist
and curator presentations. The MFA has continued this tradition and
our community activities have expanded over the years to include
providing youth with art experience in cooperation with the Anne
Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation and outreach to
at-risk youth in Baltimore and learning disabled adults in the
county. Examples of these efforts include the exhibition Critical
Exposure, which presented the photographs by Baltimore City students
which highlighted the disrepair and poor condition of their school
facilities. The youth used their art as a soapbox to bring the
blighted condition of their learning environment to the attention of
Maryland lawmakers and by testifying at State budget committee
hearings, being held right next door to our Annapolis gallery.
Another example is the exhibition Pure Art, which annually features
artwork created by developmentally disabled adults from the
Annapolis-based Providence Center's art institute. Pure Art brings a
fresh outlook on art-making through work which is largely untouched
by the expectations of the art community.
The Maryland Federation of Art is interested in working with artists and educators to serve Anne Arundel County youth. If you would like to be a part of this, please contact us at 410/268-4566 or info@mdfedart.org. Keep an eye on this page for future developments!
